Counselling Intern at Jami Mosque
Description
Primary Duties:
- Facilitate the conduction of counselling sessions in a group or individual settings to help youths cope with problems related to family issues, abusive histories, drug and alcohol abuse, and other issues.
- Offer additional support to family members by facilitating therapeutic talking sessions or scheduling visitations during appropriate times.
- Assist other staff members such as Imams, youth workers, and counsellors in developing an appropriate plan of success for each individual youth on the caseload.
- Monitor each youth’s progress during counselling sessions by employing evaluations, gathering documentation and assessing specific goals.
- Demonstrate model behaviour, appropriate communication skills and positive feedback so young people can make progress with positive behaviour interventions.
- Ensure the safety of students and youths by following all proper regulations, safety recommendations and procedures each day.
- Record information and document incidents as they occur to help keep track of problem behaviours or unsafe conditions in the facility.
- Act as a resource to individual residents when they need guidance or advice about specific life situations or social issues.
- Help with the booking of counselling appointments
Required Skills:
- Strong knowledge of Muslim youth population and positive youth development framework
- Experience working with troubled adolescents or children
- Strong proven planning and organization skills
- Effective conflict resolution skills
- Strong leadership ability
- Understanding of Islamic etiquette
- Strong interpersonal and public relation skills
- Time management skills and deadline-oriented
- Ability to respond to youth requests with patience and enthusiasm; understand the need to escalate when appropriate
- Work with little supervision or assistance, work within a team and independently
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, human services or related field considered an asset
Required Qualifications
- Applicants must be between the ages of 15 to 30 years (inclusive)
- Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, for the duration of the employment
- Legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
