Overview

ISNA Cares is seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable Faith Based Clinician to support the spiritual and emotional well-being needs of the community. This role bridges Islamic spiritual care and mental health support, providing culturally and religiously grounded care to individuals navigating illness, personal challenges, and life transitions.

The Faith Based Clinician will provide spiritual counselling, hospital visitation, campus work, and community-based religious programming, while working collaboratively with healthcare institutions, universities, and community partners. The role requires the ability to integrate Islamic theological knowledge with pastoral and mental health support, offering care that is both spiritually meaningful and psychologically informed.

This position plays an important role in strengthening holistic care for Muslim communities, particularly in healthcare and campus settings.

Key Responsibilities


Spiritual Care and Counselling

  • Provide spiritual counselling and support to individuals and families navigating personal, emotional, or faith-related challenges.
  • Offer guidance that integrates Islamic teachings with compassionate, client-centered care.
  • Support individuals experiencing grief, illness, crisis, or life transitions through pastoral and spiritually grounded counselling.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards in all counselling interactions.
  • When appropriate, collaborate with mental health professionals to ensure individuals receive comprehensive support.

Hospital Spiritual Care

  • Provide hospital visitation for Muslim patients when requested by families, healthcare staff, or community members.
  • Offer spiritual support, prayer, and pastoral presence to patients and their families.
  • Support individuals and families during critical illness, end-of-life care, and bereavement.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital spiritual care teams and healthcare providers where applicable.

Community and Campus Programming

  • Deliver Islamic educational and spiritual programming at universities, community spaces, and partner organizations.
  • Facilitate discussions, workshops, and programs on topics related to faith, well-being, identity, and spiritual resilience.
  • Support Muslim students and community members through religious guidance and mentorship.
  • Participate in community initiatives that promote holistic spiritual and mental well-being.

Outreach and Collaboration

  • Build relationships with hospitals, universities, chaplaincy departments, and community organizations.
  • Support the development of spiritual care services within healthcare and community institutions.
  • Represent ISNA Cares in relevant community events and initiatives.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and growth of spiritual care programming.

Documentation and Professional Practice

  • Maintain appropriate documentation of services provided, when required.
  • Participate in team meetings and supervision as needed.
  • Uphold professional, ethical, and confidentiality standards in accordance with spiritual care and counselling practices.

Qualifications

Applicants must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age. 
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Social Insurance Number.
  • Have a valid Driver’s License and access to a vehicle. 

Applicants should meet one of the following educational pathways:

Pathway 1: Islamic Education with Mental Health Training

  • Formal education in Islamic studies, theology, or religious scholarship (e.g., Alim/Alimah program, Islamic studies degree, or equivalent).
  • Additional training or education in counselling, psychology, social work, chaplaincy, or mental health support.

Pathway 2: Mental Health Background with Islamic Education

  • Degree or professional training in psychology, social work, counselling, psychotherapy, or a related mental health field.
  • Demonstrated education or training in Islamic theology, pastoral care, or Islamic studies.

Additional qualifications:
  • Experience providing spiritual care, pastoral counselling, or community religious leadership is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in healthcare settings, chaplaincy, or hospital visitation is an asset.
  • Experience delivering religious programming or educational sessions for youth or adults is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of Islamic traditions, pastoral care principles, and community dynamics.
  • Ability to travel locally to hospitals, universities, and community sites as required.
